In 2024, a bipartisan legislature overwhelmingly passed I-2081 into law to codify parent's rights in schools and ensure that they could have access to information about their students. Less than a year later, that same legislature stripped the provisions for parents and safety measures for students from the law by enacting HB 1296. I-001 will restore rights to parents that Democrats and Republicans agreed on just 2 years ago. Don't let them cut you out of your student's life. Three ways 001 would have helped parents in this harrowing situation: 1. Timely notification: The school should have called Marsh and Ibrahim first and not relied on the 8 year-old student to be forced to advocate for himself. 2. Access to investigation records: The HR report took months. IL26-001 strengthens parental rights to access records about their child, which could give families like this legal standing to demand information rather than wait and watch the union slow-walk it. 3. Anti-suppression: The union "sweeping it under the rug" is exactly the institutional behavior IL26-001 pushes back against by making information-withholding a legally enforceable violation, not just bad PR.
